Technology

Planned in 3D, placed with precision

3D-printed shoulder guides

Your CT scan becomes a 3D model of your shoulder, and a custom guide is printed to match it, so the Tornier implant goes exactly where it was planned.

Anatomic or reverse?

An anatomic replacement suits arthritis with a healthy rotator cuff. A reverse replacement is designed for shoulders with large rotator cuff tears or cuff arthropathy.

What to expect

Recovery

Shoulder replacement recovery

The arm rests in a sling at first, followed by a staged therapy program to restore motion and then strength.

Rotator cuff and labral repair recovery

Most shoulder arthroscopy is outpatient. After rotator cuff or labral repair, the arm stays in a sling for about 6 to 8 weeks while the repair heals, followed by physical therapy to restore motion and then strength. Full recovery usually takes 4 to 6 months, with overhead and throwing athletes returning later.

Common questions

Shoulder surgery FAQ

Should I have an anatomic or reverse shoulder replacement?

An anatomic replacement suits arthritis with a healthy rotator cuff. A reverse replacement is designed for shoulders with large rotator cuff tears or cuff arthropathy. Dr. Tannenbaum uses CT-based 3D planning to choose and position the right implant for you.

What are 3D-printed shoulder guides?

Before surgery, your CT scan is turned into a 3D model of your shoulder. A custom guide is printed to fit your bone exactly, helping place the implant where it was planned.

Do I need surgery for a rotator cuff tear?

Not always. Many partial tears improve with therapy or injections. Surgery is usually considered for full-thickness tears, tears from an injury, or pain and weakness that don't improve. An exam and MRI help decide.

How long will I be in a sling?

After rotator cuff or labral repair, the arm usually stays in a sling for about 6 to 8 weeks while the repair heals. After shoulder replacement, the sling is used at first, followed by staged therapy.

What is the InSpace balloon?

InSpace is a small, biodegradable balloon placed in the shoulder during a minimally invasive procedure to treat certain large rotator cuff tears. Dr. Tannenbaum performed the first InSpace procedure in Columbus.

How long is recovery after rotator cuff repair?

Full recovery usually takes 4 to 6 months, with overhead and throwing athletes returning later.
