What to expect

Recovery

Knee replacement recovery

Walking begins right away, with physical therapy focused on motion and strength. Many patients return to daily activities within weeks.

ACL and meniscus recovery

Most knee arthroscopy is outpatient. After a simple meniscus trim, many patients walk normally within days. ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair require a brace, crutches and a structured physical therapy program, with return to sports typically around 6 to 9 months after ACL surgery.

Common questions

Knee surgery FAQ

When should I consider a knee replacement?

A knee replacement is considered for advanced knee arthritis when pain or stiffness limits daily life and persists after non-surgical treatments such as medication, injections, bracing or therapy.

How soon will I walk after knee replacement?

Most patients stand and walk with a walker the same day or the day after surgery, and begin physical therapy right away. Recovery varies from person to person.

Do I need surgery for a torn ACL?

Not always. Surgery is usually recommended for active patients who want to return to cutting and pivoting sports, or whose knee gives way. An exam and MRI help decide whether reconstruction is the right choice.

When can I return to sports after ACL surgery?

Return to sports is typically around 6 to 9 months after ACL reconstruction, once strength, motion and testing show the knee is ready.

Can my meniscus tear be repaired?

Dr. Tannenbaum repairs the meniscus whenever possible to protect the knee long term. Some tears can't be repaired and are trimmed instead, which usually means a quicker recovery.

Where is knee surgery performed?

Dr. Tannenbaum operates at Columbus Specialty Surgery Center, Columbus Regional Hospital, Decatur County Memorial Hospital and Community Hospital South.
